Do You Hear Something?

How do you engage audio learners in your story? Many readers are visual people. They like to see things, and thus enjoy reading. (Which, by the way, I am a visual!) Audio people enjoy books on tape, music, and all things connected to the ears!

In order to draw your reader into the world you created on the written page, it is most imperative you entice them with their senses. Engagement of your readers happens with sound words. This is otherwise none as onomatopoeia: words that sound like are written. Please include words with flavor, resonance, texture, aromas, and pictures in the mind. Your readers will come back again and again when they know they can step into your world and feel as though they are actually living in the pages of your book.

Call out to your readers in a way they can relate!

Here is a wonderful list of sound words for inspiration:

clink, clang, clatter
boom, burst, explode
crunch, crackle, crinkle
gurgle, garbled, groan
murmur, cooed, whispered
plunk, splash, dripped
sizzle, splatter, splat
rumble, rick-a-shay, echoed
rattle, bang, creaked
whiz, whee!, whoa
thud, ker-plunk, drizzle
zing, zip, zoomed

Do you struggle with sound words? Or do you have some favorite sound words you'd like to share?

  1. You amaze me, you write blogs full of helpful hints, work on a query for the haunted writing clinic, and hop around to other blogs giving helpful advice--how?

Thank you, by the way, for the chocolate last night and the suggestions this morning. But I won't give up -- even though like GUTGAA my genre isn't in the running.

    1. Hi Suzanne! Sometimes it's hard for me to remember not everyone is like me. I'm visual, but many are auditory or "feelers" so it's important to include everyone in your writing.

Wait. Did that even make sense??

  6. That is a wonderful list! I know I've used a few of those words, but probably not enough. On the other hand, we probably don't want to go overboard!

Operation Agent Ink

UPDATE: PLEASE FILL OUT THIS QUESTIONNAIRE AFTER YOU SIGN UP. Have you ever wondered what agents were dying to find in their inbox/slush pile? There have been many times I entered a contest and not even received a comment, not even from one of the agents. Or maybe the agent was kind enough to leave a comment that simply said, "Sorry, this just isn't what I'm looking for, but I love the premise and your voice." I always walk away feeling unsatisfied. If I had known exactly what the agent wanted beyond, "YA" or "Fantasy" I might not have even entered a contest I knew I wouldn't win! Even more, I wasted a very busy agents time! Well, your time of guessing is up! OPERATION AGENT INK to the rescue! That's right! This workshop will help aspiring authors get on the list of an agent's WISH LIST! When the workshop is over, your manuscript will be ready to view by a group of AMAZING agents who are dying to see what you've wri...

GUTGAA Meet and Greet!

Hey everyone! I'm taking a quick break from vacation to introduce myself and say hi! I'm really looking forward to meeting everyone and meeting some new friends! -Where do you write? I live in a camper. My writing spot? Usually in bed. But sometimes I get a chance to write in the "living room" but that's rare. When I am at home (yay!) I have my own little office:) I love m space there and I can write during the day light hours. Oh, who am I kidding! That's rare. -Quick. Go to your writing space, sit down and look to your left. What is the first thing you see? My husband. Yeah, he sleeps with me! -Favorite time to write? At night. When it's quite. Aaahhh. Sweet quite. -Drink of choice while writing? Depends on the time of day I get to write. In the morning, coffee, coffee and more coffee. (with Creme Brulee creamer!) Afternoon it's iced coffee. After school, it's Dr. Pepper. Night it's water. -When writin...

The Writers Voice Entry

How excited am I? Can't you hear me laughing and squeeing, right there where you are? Yep! I'm excited! I made it tot he first round of the Writers Voice!! So today, I've posted my entry, here int his blog post, for the coaches to come around and read and decide if I'm ready to move on to the next round. Keep your fingers crossed for me PLEASE:) The entry I'm posting as went through numerous rounds of edits and revisions to get it where it is already. I've cut, squeezed, rearranged and replaced so much, I think my brain is on fire! I've changed names, combined characters, cut characters, and I've changed titles a couple of times and agonized over my genre until I cried . I've put th e first three chapters through a couple of workshops and had feedback from a few agents, so I'm sure I 've got the results I wanted. (I can be honest, can't I?) So, here we go, you beautiful guys and dolls. Feel free to leave any comments that might ...
